5 New Year Resolutions You DEFINITELY want to make for 2014

By Brandise Brockington

In a media driven, beauty inundated society, we are pressured to work on our outside appearances, and sometimes, our insides, the true essence of who we are, can be in serious need of T.L.C.

While pursuing a new diet, to get rid of those holiday pound cakes, or starting a new workout regime, add these tips for use in the New Year, and all year long as well.

  1. Pursue Peace:

Our lives can get very busy! Work, Relationships, Responsibilities….all of these can leave us wiped out and stressed out. What can you schedule into your list of busy life demands that fosters your peace? I say schedule, because it has to be non negotiable. Here are a few ideas: a walk on the beach, sing in the shower, get a pedicure, read a book….

  1. Love Yourself:

Sounds easier said than done, but I mean it in a balanced way. Love your strengths, be aware of your weaknesses, and celebrate whom you are and how far you have come. Don’t spend any time comparing yourself to someone else’s journey. I have always believed that true beauty radiates from the inside out, and we can’t truly love others, until we love ourselves.

  1. Forgive:

Yes I said it! When you read this, was there a certain person whose face came to mind? Is there a situation that happened last year, or before, that still boils your blood?   I read once, that forgives is like drinking poison, and expecting the other person to die. Isn’t that crazy? Forgiveness is for YOU, not them. Forgiveness means you release the offending party in your HEART, so that you can be healthy. It in no way justifies or makes acceptable whatever they have done to you. You may need to find someone to help you walk through this process, but I promise you, in the end, you will be healthy and whole inside!

  1. Laugh Loud and Laugh Often:

Did you know that laughter is good medicine? Have you ever had one of those good laughs, the ones that make you cry? I have a friend, and she is soooo funny! When she calls me, it’s usually to tell some silly thing that happened to her, and we literally are crying tears of joy on the phone! Sometimes, it’s just those moments that are so timely, and extremely effective in relieving stress.   I also remember once having an awful break up. I was so sad. I called that same friend’s mom because I needed some advice on how to cope. She told me to watch some part of my favorite funny movie everyday, even if it was just a few minutes. It helped! It got my mind off of the break up, and I felt better! Laughter is healing!

  1. Focus on the Positive:

Let’s face it; it’s much easier to focus on what’s WRONG. Turn on the news, and the reports are filled with the negative and horrible things that happened today in your neighborhood, and around the world.   We have to put forth effort to find the good, and focus on that. I am not suggesting that we live in a happy bubble, ignoring problems that arise. Make yourself write a list of the 5 things that went RIGHT today. Also, make a jar, and for every good thing that happens to you in 2014, make a note and drop it in the jar. Fill the jar with positive quotes as well. When you are having a bad day, pull something out, and remind yourself to focus on the positive.

Beauty radiates from the inside out. Let’s spend 2014 working on our hearts, minds, and our spirit. Here’s to a beautiful 2014!

Drug Infused Monopoly Industry

By: Yesenia N Garcia

There are many things that people fear, one of them is death. The whole notion of death troubles even the most secure and confident individuals. As we know, death is part of the human cycle that at one point everyone must encounter. So why do we fear diseases and disorders? This has been done via media and medical organizations. With a constant reminder through physicians, magazines, television, media, fear of death and disease is instilled in us. So how do we react to this? I’ll tell you. We become submissive to the idea that medicine is the best policy. Whenever you feel sick or have certain symptoms it is not rare to go check yourself with your primary physician, sometimes even a hospital right? Yes, that is what everyone assumes to be the smartest decision, but what happens when you are diagnosed with a disease? Worries start to occur. The real question is not what to do next, but to analyze if you are actually sick. Is this a medical problem or is it a wrong turn in your life that is causing troubling symptoms? For example, since when did being shy become a sign for Social Anxiety Disorder? This is the problem with healthcare; you never know if what you are being diagnosed is correct in its entirety.

In a presentation given by Mathew Emmens, he describes how the ups and downs of life have become (interpreted) a mental disorder. He presents the topic of ordinary people turning into patients without realizing it. With less than 5% of the world population, the United States makes 50% of the global market in prescription drugs! How does this happen you might ask. Aside from it being a large percentage, we as the population engage in such expenditure when we decide to buy prescription drugs. There is a drug for almost anything and when we are aware of having a disease or a disorder we think of the consequences that it can bring later. It is there when we become interested in taking prescription drugs to help us cure or treat our illness. Now, notice that there is a $500 billion dollar pharmaceutical industry who in a very discreet way advertises the condition to link to the medicine in order to sell it. For the purpose of this essay, I will be focusing in Attention Deficit Disorder, sometimes referred to as ADD or ADHD and the drugs available for it.

Attention Deficit Disorder is “a problem of not being able to focus, being overactive, not being able control behavior, or a combination of these.” (National Library of Medicine) In order to be diagnosed with ADHD the levels must be out of normal range for a person’s age and development. It is regarded as a biological chemical problem in the brain or can also be a result of a complexity of social, physical, and cultural factors. It is not clear what causes ADHD, because the causes remain speculative as not enough evidence exists to classify it as a brain disorder. Who gets diagnosed with this medical problem then? Unfortunately, it is the younger generation for the most part. This behavioral disorder is usually diagnosed during a person’s childhood but can continue as an adult. It is more common for a male (13.2%) to get diagnosed than a female (5.6%) with such disorder. Symptoms include the following: having a hard time resisting temptation, having trouble taking turns, having difficulty getting along with others, and so on. Based on epidemiology data about 4% to 6% of the U.S. population has ADD/ADHD, roughly about 8 to 9 million people. In a California survey of 2007, 6.2% of people were diagnosed with the disorder. There is not proper documentation or evidence to determine if social class is a factor or not to getting the disorder.

Because this is labeled as a disorder, the only way people try to cure or treat is by medications. As mentioned before, when fear is instilled people opt to what the doctor says is correct. Rates of ADHD diagnosis increased an average of 3% per year from 1997 to 2006 and an average of 5.5% per year from 2003 to 2007. The highest rates of parent-reported ADHD diagnosis in children were covered by Medicaid and multiracial children. There has been real concern with pharmaceutical companies because it seems like the rates of drug use has increased tremendously.

There are many pharmaceutical industry companies who supply the drugs needed for the disorder such as Shire, Lilly, and Novartis. Shire is a recent global company to the industry where it sells more than half a billion dollars of an amphetamine drug called Adderall every year. In a New York presentation given by Mathew Emmens, he notes that in 1996 the total sales of Adderall was $10 million dollars and increased to $520 million in the course of six years. Adderall constitutes more than 40 percent of the total company’s revenue. “…According to CHADD, medication is the most effective foundation for treatment.” (Cassel,Moyihan,2005) Although there are different types of treatment the drug industries are still encouraging that the most effective treatment is the use of medicalization. Pharmaceuticals companies contribute to making healthy people into patients. How sure do they know people have such disorder yet no actual test is available to determine ADHD? The companies create doctor alliances because they are the ones to prescribe the medications. In return these huge companies give grants to them and other organizations as they also seek to gain something by granting the money.

There is a variety of prescribed medications that can be given to treat this medical problem. Treating ADHD is collaboration between the health care provider and the patient. Stimulants are the most widely used treatments and best known as well. Between 70-80 percent of children with ADHD respond positively to these medications. In addition, non-stimulants are also approved for treating ADHD since 2003. This medication seems to have fewer side effects than stimulants and can last up to 24 hours. Ritalin is a stimulant used and it is in a tablet form administered by mouth. Some of the side effects of this drug are that it often causes rebound and roller coaster effects, and can be very abusable. Another drug that is prescribed is called Dexedrine. It may take up to one hour to be effective and usually lasts about 6 to 8 hours. For the most part people will take it twice a day with six hour intervals. In addition, Adderall is one of the most common prescribed drugs for many of those who are affected by ADHD. This tablet usually last 6 hours and may be given once or twice a day. Common side effects of these drugs are as follows: appetite suppression, sleep disturbance, mood changes, rollercoaster effect (a continuous cycling of the blood level, either rising or falling throughout the day), irritability and anxiety. There have not been studies whether the drugs are addictive, but there is research saying they are abusive.

So if these drugs are not necessarily addictive, why has there been an increase in drug use over the past several years? What role do these pharmaceutical companies play in such increase? In Marcia Angell’s “The Truth about Drug Companies”, she discusses the many different strategies used by the industries that are causing more and more patients to obtain prescription drugs. First she addresses the basic component of advertising. This is the most important factor in my opinion because this is the way the companies appeal to the patient, the bystander, the professional, everyone in general. When these drug industries are advertising, they make sure what they advertise will lengthen your life, make you happier, and make an enjoyable experience to live. Prescription drugs are expensive, but the way they are sold is basically telling you that you get what you pay for. For instance, Americans spend about $200 billion dollars on average a year on prescription drugs, while it seems to increase at a rate of 12% since 1999. Another way of great marketing skills is the use and how the new product or “mee-too” (a past drug that is modified and improved and sell it as new) drug uses words such as research, innovation, and American research to make it seem that the drug has already been tested and guaranteed to work.

Not only are people getting brain washed but so are other institutions like clinics, nursing facilities and so on. Marcia Angell is not only referring to prices but also the regulations needed for such companies. The important thing to note is that pharmaceutical industries are hardly a model for free enterprise. These companies are free to price their own drugs and are dominantly funded by a government institution. It may seem a little too convenient that where the support is coming from is where regulation of prices and advertising can occur, however not happening. For example, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have given companies the right to exclusive marketing even if it is not particular in discovering new drugs but only building a monopoly as their marketing efforts are focused on influencing doctors since they are the ones to write prescriptions

All in all, these prescribed medications are set to treat your disorder. The problem is that not everyone who are prescribed these medications like young children are exactly 100% sure they have ADD/ADHD. It is not just because people are experiencing similar symptoms to those of the disorder that entitles them to be diagnosed. As mentioned before, the pharmaceutical companies have created a patient-group where “we’ as a population become an element for marketing strategies. By that I mean that when the drug companies advertise they appeal to the emotion of the people and doctors. They target it with the long term effects of a certain disease or illness then link it to death if you don’t take care of it. In which they convey that the medicine is the best option. Thus, creating a market where we consume drugs that for some the long term effects of it are worse than the disease you have or disorder. As a society we are submissive to what physicians tell us is and regard it as the better option for us. So how convenient is it for them to just prescribe medication for everything when we are not sure exactly we have.

Whether you are healthy or unhealthy, pharmaceutical industries have made all of us patients by making us think that medicalization is the better option for our illnesses. In the past two decades it is clearly seen that pharmaceutical industries have moved from its original purpose of creating and producing useful drugs. Now days, it is treated and operated as a marketing machine to sell the drugs as the companies use their power and wealth to “co-opt” the institutions they grant money to including FDA, US Congress, and medical centers as mentioned by Marcia Angell in “The Truth about Drug Companies”

How to Keep your Children Safe from Predators Online: Sweetie is NOT enough.

If you have not seen…, Sweetie is a new program tailored to capture child sex offenders online. This image as helped track thousands of online sexual predators…  There are many predators out there. But SWEETIE is NOT enough…
Here are some tips to help keep your home safe from such intrusion.
1. Educate yourself about Technology.
It is very important you do care about technology now-a-day, especially if you have a child. The time of “oh I’m not into technology” is no longer.
It is important to be up to date with technology. Plus, you will feel better about what is going on in your child’s life.
Read about Parent Controls
Note: Know the social media outlets. (They are a lot of applications, but be aware of what your child is using). I recently came back from talking to kids and they said, “If I don’t put my real name out there, then no one knows.” Yes, it’s that serious. Be aware. If you are a teen reading this, be aware.
2. Conversation.
Now that you know more, have a conversation with your child/teen. It’s hard to talk to them sometimes, but they do listen to you. Keep that line of communication.  And include…
3. Home rules.
It is important to have home rules in general to help keep order in your home. Now more so, its important you add a home rule when it comes to the Internet.
Remember that Internet is a reward, like watching TV.  Mine the hours. A child should not be in front of a TV or computer more than a few hours a day. If they have a project, then spend time helping them with a project. If they are teens, get them into sports. Curricular activities, after school programs to help them keep active.
You will know if they have a project if you send a quick email to their teachers. Stay accountable of your child’s’ homework, this will also show you care about what they are doing. This will also teach your child how to be accountable.
4. Talk to you children’s friends’ parents.
Keep track on what they are doing? This is why parent teacher day, and back to school nights are important. This is your time to talk to the parents, exchange numbers and really find out what is going on.
5. Be mindful and strict.
Kids need and want rules. Your kids will test you to see how much they can get away with. If you give in, guess what? They get their way. And they will know what to do the next time. When they keep bugging you for the Internet, and your answer is no, mean no. You are teaching them that NO means NO. This will help them understand the meaning of no later on in their life.
6. Keep the conversation flowing at dinner table with your family.
If you are too busy, well step up and be a parent. You have a child, now take care of them.
7. Note I placed  the word Conversation about three times in this Post.
Hope this gives you some initiative to be honest with yourself and your child about what are some things happening online.

How to Help Decrease #Anxiety before a #Surgery: Simple Tips

Anxiety is a sign, an alert that something is off. Well when you are about to have surgery HECK YEAH there is something wrong! So of course your anxiety will increase! Boy logic I tell ya. And anxiety before having a surgery is wayyyyy normal. If you didn’t have some anxiety well… you would be a machine. And though most of us are well run oiled machines… we are also humans.
So no, you are not bonkers because you have anxiety before surgery. You are having surgery. It is normal.
So here is a list of things you can do to help you decrease your anxiety before you have surgery, I’ll explain why it’s important too. I will also keep it light because you need to laugh about it a little even though surgery is very serious…
1. Breath…
We go through a lot, and finding out you are having surgery can be shocking. Sometimes we forget to breath because we don’t know “what might happen.” Trust that you will be ok. Breathing allows your muscles to get that oxygen that they need to relax and not be so tense. Also, drinking water is important. (But talk to your doctor about what you need to drink or not drink and by when you should stop drinking anything).
2. If you feel you have to, Cry.
If you have to release your emotions do so! If you have to vent, warn your friend before you start venting so they can be prepared to help you. Don’t get all mad if they are no prepared, find another friend. Call you psychotherapist and set up a session, heck that’s why you pay them for right? 🙂
3. Keep it positive!
We are humans, and thinking of the worst is something we tend to do! LIKE:  WHOOOOOA what am I going to do?! Where is my car?! Hot or cold?? My house! What are my kids going to eat? I can’t cook (some of ya can’t really cook anyways and are talking about I can’t cook for them! LOL). Keep it simple. Keep it calm.
I can tell you from prior experience, it’s hard to do at first, just remind yourself you are an awesome human.
Keeping it positive helps you keep focused. SO…
4. Make a list of questions.
Ask your doctor and ASK them! This will help with all the “what ifs” which can increase the anxiety. This way you can ask away, talk to the doctor about all your concerns and be honest and that will help you relieve some stress.
5. Make To do list.
Make a list of the things you have to do before your surgery. Why? Because you need to get yourself organized and focused on yourself because you ARE important, let alone if you have kids and dogs or cats! It will also keep you busy and you will feel ready. JUST don’t focus on the List TOO much. If you have friends who offer you help, take it.
Here is my to do list as an Example (example):
1. Tell friends and family (If you don’t tell anyone, they will not know and tell them to bring healthy foods only.)
2.Paperwork needed to be done for work.
3.Tell lead intern to gather and give me date and time for meeting.
4. Pay Bills for next month
5. Buy dog food.
6. Clean house, disinfect   (actually cleaning is a great stress reducer, but if you can’t move don’t do it!)
7. Tell brother/cousin to help with Buddy (Dog, walk morning/night feed).
8. Buy healthy meals freeze (since you can’t cook as you will be in bed rest).
9. Update your will, live will… finance will – be graceful and kind.
10. Take a shower… and eat healthy!
6. Relax
Do some yoga. Meditate and hang out with friends. Put your phone down. It’s important you make time for you and your family. Don’t get too involved in new things… keep it simple.
7. Smile. Laugh. Lunch.
Remember you are getting through it. They are going in you to help “fix” the situation. This is part of your healing process. A friend once told me, you don’t have control of what they do, but you do have control of what happens before and after the surgery. And trust your doctors. Make them some good cupcakes before your surgery and create that positive environment… #justsaying
8. Watch a funny movie.
I recommend you do NOT watch your surgery that sometimes can give you more anxiety because you will have it in your mind over and over and over… and that is exactly what we are trying to help you work through.
9. Keep it healthy
If you can, work out, stretch your neck (ask your doctor what you can’t and can do). Talk to you Dietitian and ask what you can and cannot eat. And get ready for your healing process. Take a Brisk walk with your kid, partner, dog or cat.
10. Have faith, whatever you believe trust that you will be ok. And one last thing… leave me a comment with more intel 😀

Smile (if you want to)

Mental Illness and Mental Health: The Psychoeducation of the difference between.

So what is the difference between Mental illness and Mental health?
Mental Illness: According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness (2013, nami.org) a mental illness is a medical condition that disrupts a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illnesses are medical conditions that often result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.
Serious mental illnesses include major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and borderline personality disorder. The good news about mental illness is that recovery is possible.
Mental illnesses can affect persons of any age, race, religion or income. Mental illnesses are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character or poor upbringing. Mental illnesses are treatable. Most people diagnosed with a serious mental illness can experience relief from their symptoms by actively participating in an individual treatment plan.
So what is Mental Health?
Mental health, as defined by the Surgeon General’s Report on Mental Health, “refers to the successful performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people, and the ability to adapt to change and cope with adversity.”
Mental health refers to our cognitive, and/or emotional wellbeing; is how about how we think, feel and behave. Mental health, if somebody has it, can also mean an absence of a mental disorder. Mental health also includes a person’s ability to enjoy life – to attain a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience  (October 19, 2013, Newstoday.com).
Jes Notes:
One thing I find that I psychoeducate a lot about is that a mental illness, because there are different types, can be like the Cold or flu, at some point someone has had a mental illness. A big one being anxiety. I have yet to see a human not have anxiety in this lifetime. It’s a normal response to life sometimes. It’s a natural response to help you alert you… What then makes it an illness is when you don’t know how to work through it.  And note I said THROUGH it. Because just like a cold or flu, it is a process. You have to let the symptoms takes its course. And No, I am not saying that a mental illness is a virus. It’s a simile.  So let me give you another example, Its like having headaches… it’s a response to your body that alerts you, that makes you see that something is off your personal balance.
You see, people who live, that would be us… go through life and push through and are resilient and make things happen, because we are “health” that does not obtain us from having anxiety when we are stressed or sadness when someone passes. All these things being, it is a “normal” response to how our body reacts to pain.
It’s when it gets out of “control” that we begin to suffer with the Mental illness labels.  If you don’t rest and you keep chugging with a simple cold, it can turn into pneumonia (label) right?  So a mental illness is the same.
As a psychotherapist, I’m constantly psychoeducating how a mental illness is not a fault of anyone. It’s an illness. Just like the flu where you have to rest up and take meds if you need to and then try to sort it all out and get better. It takes time, want and patience. Just like a lot of things we already go through in this world.
I hope this gives you a little bit of new or supportive knowledge.
Kindly,
Jes Sofia

Care Inspires Care

I consider myself to be an optimistic person. I tend to see the glass half full before complaining. Now, am I happy all the time? Of course not; I’m human. But here’s what I know: YOU have a choice. YOU have control. Life is tough and times may get hard, but you’re tougher.
It seems like everyone in the world knows that YOLO (You Only Live Once); obviously. That is exactly why I care. I care about my past, my present and I care about my future. I care about my life and goals and aspirations. I care about the lessons I have learned and the ones that the universe has in store for me. I have grown up thinking that I can do what I want with my life and I truly believe that.
So what inspires me to care? Short and simple: My surroundings. My family. My friends. Myself. I believe that everyone deserves to be happy. It’s not entitlement or privilege; it’s a basic human right. Curiosity inspires me to care. That kind of uncertainty keeps me going. I like to believe that every choice you make takes you where you need to be and that’s the beauty of life.
Hope inspires care; having the comfort and faith that the world is at your hands and that you can truly make a difference. I truly believe that small acts of kindness create a snowball effect. There is so much beauty in the world and love to be shared that I want to be a part of it. I seek to inspire, help, and educate both through my line of work and my personal life. I want and am helping others to reach their goals and to believe in themselves- to feel empowered. Kindness can be shown in a smile, a gesture, a comment or action and that is what I aim to do every day; I aim to pay it forward.

My Affair…. with Dove

I love my Hair!

Tis true. I think, taking care of my hair is the most time consuming part of getting ready for me. Granted I get ready pretty fast…(so I think..LOL).  But I do know and think is that taking care of myself is a big part of staying Mentally Prepared for my day. Because when I take care of me first, I can take care of everyone else better. So Taking care of me is very important. There is more to its than looking cute.

So what does one do when they have frizzy long hair? Well, I will be honest. This is my to do list I do to keep my hair healthy as possible…

1.  I wash my hair with Dove’s Hair Therapy.

2. Brush it while its still wet

3. Towel dry it and let the hair be damp dry.

4. Add some Style+Care Frizz-Free Shine  Cream-Serum
and let the hair dry out.

Usually I let my hair air dry but If I have to then I’ll use my hair dryer to help it dry up a little bit. Still leaving it moist because I don’t like it all dry.

After my hair is dry I place it in a Swirl Bun. (Is when you swirl you hair and make it into a bun). And a few hours later I have curls and bounce, soft and good smelling hair. Another reason why I don’t like to do too much to my hair is because If i add curls or dry it up with the blow dryer I get a burnt smell.
And then I have this! I like to use my Self Friend pictures because I’m about keeping it real. So this is my Hair after I did What I wrote before.

This is me with my hair about to speak at a Mental Health Pannel at the #LATISM13 conference in New York.

and the Second picture is of me and Mel enjoying New York and an awesome fun time after dinner party. Isn’t she Gorgeous!? 🙂

Note: Disclaimer: These Dove products were provided free of charge in collaboration with Bloggers of Health to facilitate this product review.  I just love their Hair Products and I like their Socially responsible company.
